3 Pillar Platform

A CMA for Physicians:
Living Our Values and Ensuring our Sustainability to Contribute

The Triple Aim framework seeks to optimize health system performance by improving three key elements: the health of the population, the patient experience and cost-effectiveness. To achieve these three outcomes it is essential that the system supports a Quadruple Aim, adding a commitment to improving the work life of physicians. We need to value our health as well as that of our patients. As CMA President, one of my main priorities would be to continue to strengthen the work being done to address professionalism, physician stress and burnout. We too are humans caring for humans.

A CMA for Trainees:
Supporting the Next Generation of Leaders

One of the key principles of leadership I endorse is “enabling others to act”. As a clinical teacher and academic physician for over 34 years, I understand the importance of mentoring young physicians and enabling their meaningful participation in the discussion, planning and design of the changes needed in medical education and the healthcare system. I will be a champion of issues that resonate with students and residents such as addressing tuition increases and debt load, encouraging equity in admissions criteria to med school, future employment opportunities, physician well-being, and our social accountability mandate.

A CMA with Patients:
True Partnership and Social Accountability

Our interests are shared ones. A CMA strategic objective is to “bring a patient-centred perspective to the work of the CMA”. Shared responsibility, accountability and collaboration in co-designing improvements in the health care system are innovative ways to bring about the changes we need. It’s time for patients to have a seat at the table. As doctors, we are exposed daily to the inequities for our most marginalized and vulnerable populations. As CMA President, I would commit to lead the CMA in partnership with patients to improve access to care by advocating for universal pharmacare and upstream policy changes that address the social determinants of health.
